In it's heyday during World War II, Paia was a lively place. Today, though a little weathered, it still has quaint charm and an extremely casual atmosphere. Paia is a rainbow of buildings and home to people from all over the world. Once a thriving plantation community, it is now a mecca for windsurfers from Japan, Europe and the Mainland, and a mixture of old-timers and new residents. For some, this brings a remembrance of the late 1800's when sugar plantation workers immigrated to Maui from countries all over the world. People of all races worked side by side, and a true sense of community began to emerge. The seaside town is still known for its relaxed pace and friendly smiles. Kuau (usually considered a part of Paia) is along the ocean between Paia and Hookipa, and home to Maui's best fish restaurant - Mama's Fish House. The Paia/Kuau area has a wide variety of vacation rental accommodation - from inexpensive studios to exquisite oceanfront houses.
