The windsurfing in Kihei is mostly flat water sailing with an occasional south swell in the summer. The side-off-shore winds are generally gusty and can shift at anytime. NEVER SAIL ALONE! Wind conditions can vary from calm to choppy to extreme, with winds exceeding 30 knots. The off-shore reefs are shallow, the conditions can be difficult, and it is best to ask advice from a local sailor. Be sure to understand the conditions before going out. Maalaea or "Speed Beach" is off-shore for advanced sailors only.
